and… how was New York?
Great, Huge, Amazing, Awesome, Massive, Fat!!!
We just flew back to CH from the big city, our heart full of memories and emotions, after plenty of amazing and wonderful moments and encounters! Barely off the plane, we are already writing… so that you too can get a little summary of what we have seen in New York at the CMJ and the support we could give to our talented Swiss artists who played there.
The music has been flying high in the NYC sky… as high as the Empire State Building, symbol of the city and musical adventures of two Swiss bands in New York:
Rootwords (GE) and
Great Black Waters (ZH)
Two such different soundscapes and musical approaches and genres, that they actually very well summed up the incredible variety as well as quality of CH-music in NYC!
We already knew Rootwords… we discoveredBjörn – guitarist for Fai Baba and leader of the solo project Great Black Waters, along with his intriguing sounds and brand new bandmates among other things! Great Black Waters – who is also connected with the TM (no, not trade mark, but Ticinese Mafia) btw, for he produced the outstanding YOUR VACATIONS by TATUM. G. RUSH – has been living in New York for a few months now and welcomed us to his rehearsal room, on a rainy Brooklyn night, with a solo video, just before his performance with the band at Goodbye Blue Mondays!
Rootwords landed in NYC with his whole Kinyamasounds team from Geneva – Julio, of course – the front man, Stan the man – DJ and Nicolas – the manager. Hard working guys, no tourists… photo/video shootings, networking, trailer, panels, workshops, concerts, video for a new clip in Brooklyn… but ok, also small parties with Swiss friends. Including the invitation to the Swiss Consul’s place and the After-Party following the concerts @ the Left Field Club (Lower East Side), but also the chill-out CMJ afterparty in Greenpoint (Brooklyn) with Matt McDonald, for once are not taking care of bookings, but Bloody Marys and homemade burgers…
New York was, is and and always will be an incredible opportunity to gain visibility, interact with programmers from around the world, have networking sessions and of course to promote the Swiss music.
Very special thanks to the CH-Consul in NY Thomas Schneider, Sandrine Ligabue (responsible for culture at the Swiss Consulate), Maurice, Billy the artist, Matt McDonald, but also our Mx3-Stickers, waving like flags despite the rain, sun and wind, in the New York skies (this special topic can be followed on instagram: # nych14)

und wie war’s in New York?

Wir sind gerade erst von der grossen Stadt wieder in die CH geflogen, das Herz voller Erinnerungen und Emotionen, nach all diesen atemberaubenden und wunderbaren Momente und Begegnungen! Das Flugzeug kaum verlassen, schon sind wir am verfassen… um euch allen eine kleine Zusammenfassung von dem, was wir in New York am CMJ erlebt haben und der Unterstützung die wir unseren talentvollen Schweizer Künstler geben konnten zu bieten.
Hoch ist die Musik geflogen… hoch wie das Empire State Building, Symbol der Stadt und der musikalischen Abenteuer unserer beiden CH-Bands in New York:

Great Black Waters (ZH)
Zwei so unterschiedliche Klangwelte und so verschiedene Arten zu musizieren, dass sie eigentlich die unglaubliche Vielfalt und Qualität der CH-Musik in NYC sehr gut zusammengefasst haben!
Rootwords kannten wir schon, Björn – Gitarrist bei Fai Baba und Leader des Soloprojekts Great Black Waters – haben wir entdeckt, zusammen mit interessanten Details, wie sein starker Link mit der TM (nicht für Trade Mark, sondern für Tessiner Mafia…:-) zum Beispiel, er ist nämlich – unter anderem – auch für die Produktion vom hervorragenden Titel YOUR VACATIONS von Tatum G. Rush zuständig. Great Black Waters lebt seit ein paar Monaten in New York und hat uns in seinem Proberaum, Mitten in einer regnerischen Nacht in Brooklyn, mit einem Solo-Video begrüsst, kurz vor seiner Performance mit Band im historischen Lokal Goodbye Blue Monday!
Rootwords landete mit seinem ganzen Kinyamasounds-Team aus Genf in NYC, Julio natürlich – der Frontman, Stan the man – DJ und Nicolas für das Management. Entspannung und Tourismus waren wirklich nicht angesagt… sondern Shootings, Networking, Trailer drehen, Panels, Workshops, Konzerte, Videoaufnahmen für einen Clip in Brooklyn, aber ok… auch kleine Partys mit Schweizer Freunde. Darunter bleiben die Einladung beim Schweizer Konsul und die After-Party nach den beiden Konzerten im LeftField Club (Lower East Side) speziell in Erinnerung, aber auch die chill-out CMJ after-party in Greenpoint (Brooklyn) mit Matt McDonald der sich ausnahmsweise mal nicht um Booking, sondern um Bloody Mary und hausgemachte Burger gekümmert hat…
New York war, ist und bleibt eine unglaubliche Gelegenheit für alle, um Sichtbarkeit zu gewinnen, mit Programmierer aus der ganzen Welt – die sich am CMJ befinden – Networking sessions zu haben und natürlich die Schweizer Musik zu promoten.

So How was New York?

A peine rentrés, le coeur gros pleins de belles rencontres et d’émotions, on se devait, au sortir de l’avion de vous faire un petit résumé de ce que nous avons fait à New York dans le cadre du CMJ et du soutien à nos beaux artistes suisses là-bas.
Et on en aura vu de toutes le couleurs, à l’image de l’empire state building qui se pare suivant les heures de bleu blanc rouge ricain, de Gay Flag colors ou d’un blanc sobre. Il aura été le théâtre et le symbôle de l’aventure de deux groupes suisses à New York:
Rootwords (GE) et
Great Black Waters (ZH)
Deux univers sonores et deux façons d’aborder et faire de la musique si différentes, que – du coup – l’incroyable richesse, variété et qualité de la musique “made in Switzerland” étaient très bien résumées à NYC!
On connaissait Rootwords, on a découvert Björn, guitariste de Fai Baba derrière le projet solo de Great Black Waters, on aura appris plein de choses en particulier ses liens intenses avec la TM – pas la Trade Mark mais la Ticinese Mafia:) – puisque c’est lui qui entre autres a mixé l’excellent titre YOUR VACATIONS de Tatum G. Rush. Great Black Waters – new yorkais depuis quelques mois – nous a accueilli dans son local de répétition, un soir de pluie à Brooklyn, pour une vidéo en solo quelques heures avant une prestation en groupe au Goodbye Blue Monday de Bushwick!
Rootwords eux ont débarqué en force de Genève, Julio figure proue, Stan the man au DJing et Nicolas pour la supervision. Au taquet, l’équipe de Kinyamasounds a enchaîné, trailer, networking, panels, concerts, tournage de clip vidéo à Brooklyn, petites fêtes entre amis suisses. Parmi ces dernières on se rappellera de l’apéro dinatoire chez le consul général de Suisse, ou de l’after-party qui a suivi les deux concerts de nos vaillants suisses au Leftfield dans le Lower East Side, the place to be ou encore de la post CMJ party de Matt McDonald à Greenpoint avec Bloody Mary et home made burgers…
New York aura été l’occasion pour chacun de se faire connaître, tisser des liens avec les tourneurs venus du monde entier au CMJ, de faire connaître la musique suisse.

Siamo appena tornati dalla grande mela, il bagaglio pieno di stimolanti incontri ed emozioni meravigliose, scesi dall’aereo volevamo farvi un breve riassunto di quello che abbiamo fatto a New York nell’ambito del CMJ festival e riguardo alla promozione degli artisti svizzeri presenti.
L’Empire State Building coi suoi regolari cambi di colore e atmosfera, è stato teatro e simbolo dell’avventura di due gruppi svizzeri a New York:
Rootwords (GE) e
Great Black Waters (ZH)
Due paesaggi sonori e due modi di affrontare e fare musica così diversi che – in fondo – hanno perfettamente riassunto l’incredibile ricchezza, varietà, nonché qualità della musica “made in Switzerland” a New York!
Rootwords lo conoscevamo già, Björn (tra le altre cose chitarrista di Fai Baba e leader del progetto solista Great Black Waters) lo abbiamo scoperto lì. Interessante sapere, che il chitarrista ha anche dei legami con il Ticino, è infatti sua la produzione dell’eccellente brano YOUR VACATIONS di TATUM. G. RUSH.
Ascoltatelo… le sue sonorità sono profonde e suggestive! Great Black Waters vive a New York già da alcuni mesi e ci ha accolto nella suo locale prove, durante una notte di pioggia a Brooklyn, per realizzare un video di presentazione da solista, poche ore prima dell’esibizione assieme al suo gruppo al Goodbye Blue Mondays di Bushwick (Brooklyn)!
Rootwords sbarcano da Ginevra al gran completo, Julio – il frontman, Stan – il DJ e Nicolas per la supervisione. I ragazzi di Kinyamasounds non si sono certo riposati… tra interviste, networking sessions, tavole rotonde, trailer, concerti, riprese video a Brooklyn… ma ci sono stati anche momenti di relax e divertimento con gli amici svizzeri. Tra questi vanno ricordati con particolare piacere l’invito al Consolato generale e l’after-party che ha seguito i due concerti al Leftfield nella Lower East Side – the place to be – o ancora l’after-party del CMJ a Greenpoint con Matt McDonald, che per una volta non si è occupato di booking, ma di Bloody Mary e hamburger fatti in casa…
New York è stata per tutti un’occasione straodinaria per conoscere e conoscersi, creare connessioni importanti con programmatori provenienti da tutto il mondo presenti al CMJ, come anche di promuovere la musica svizzera oltre oceano.
Un ringraziamento speciale va a Thomas Schneider (responsabile della cultura del Consolato), Sandrine Ligabue (consolato svizzero), Maurice, Billy the artist e Matt McDonald, ma anche ai nostri adesivi MX3 che sventolavano nel cielo newyorkese sfidando pioggia, vento e sole (le loro avventure su Instagram: # nych14)
